Okay, it’s March – so no, you’re probably not cranking the AC just yet. But here in Connecticut, warm weather sneaks up on us fast.
And when that first hot day hits and you finally flip the switch, there’s a good chance your air conditioner is going to greet you with a smell that’s somewhere between old gym socks and a damp basement. Not exactly the fresh spring vibe you were going for, right?
So what’s actually going on in there?
Here’s the short version: Although your system has been providing heat, the same system(s) incorporate an AC coil which had been sitting idle all winter. During that downtime, moisture, dust, and all kinds of particles have been hanging out inside your system – specifically on a piece of equipment called the evaporator coil (aka: “AC coil”), resulting in the coil becoming a haven for this particulate…Luckily, most if not all systems provide both heating and AC, resulting in year long air circulation and filtration, which increases the need to maintain your system(s) and at the very least – clean the AC coil and replace air filters.
It’s not just the AC coil and filter that require maintenance! Clogged drain lines, and occasionally, even leaky ductwork can all contribute to that musty funk. And according to the EPA, roughly one-third to one-half of all buildings have damp conditions that encourage mold growth. That’s a lot of homes harboring stuff that, with regularly scheduled maintenance, can help to increase indoor air quality and comfort.
Why should you care beyond the smell?
Because it’s not just unpleasant – it can actually affect your health. Mold spores circulating through your home can trigger allergy symptoms, aggravate asthma, and cause respiratory irritation, especially for kids, older adults, and anyone with a sensitive immune system. The EPA reports that Americans spend about 90% of their time indoors, so your indoor air quality matters way more than most people realize.
What can you do about it?
Start simple – swap out your air filter if you haven’t in a while. But for the deeper stuff like cleaning AC coils, clearing drain lines, and checking your ductwork – you really want a pro handling that. An air purifier can also make a huge difference in keeping your air clean long after the maintenance is done.
The best move? Get ahead of it now, before the heat arrives and you’re stuck breathing in that musty welcome-back gift from your AC.
